The Königstraße · then & now

This was once the residence
of the Danish King

Until 1864, Altona belonged to the Danish crown — and the Königstraße was its boulevard.

The king lived here. When the Danish monarchs travelled through the Duchy of Holstein, they took up residence on the Königstraße — for them, Altona was the second most important city in the realm after Copenhagen.

The old Altona town hall and the first Altona hospital both stood along this street. The Altona City Theatre (pictured) only arrived in 1876 · by then the Danish era was already over.

That, of all places, a Danish hotelier should run his hotel right here is no coincidence · it is a homecoming.

  1. 1648 Frederick III grants Altona its town charter · the Königstraße most likely owes its name to him.
  2. 1864 Altona becomes Prussian · the end of more than 200 years under the Danish king.

Egon's Elbe Walk

Hamburg along the Elbe
in three hours

A route tried and tested by the owner · six stops, around three hours, always close to the water.

  1. 10 min
Outside the EGON HOTEL by day

    Start · EGON HOTEL

Begin the day with a good cup of coffee in the lounge. Then turn right out of the door, straight across the road and through the park · towards the harbour and the Elbe.

Egon's tip: Early Sunday morning is the loveliest time · the city still belongs to the early risers.
  2. 210 min
The Fischmarkt on a Sunday morning

    Fischmarkt

Every Sunday this place buzzes with life. Live music, dancing locals and market stalls with everything your heart could wish for · from fresh fruit and flowers to fish and regional specialities. A real taste of Hamburg.

Egon's tip: Be there before 9:30 am · that's when it's busiest, and the market crier will talk you into the best fish roll going.
  3. 345 min
The Museumshafen Övelgönne on the Elbe

    On towards Övelgönne

Follow the Elbe, always keeping to the water's edge. You'll pass little beaches and beautiful old houses, with the huge container ships gliding slowly by in view. Nature, harbour and big city · all at once.

Egon's tip: Slip off your shoes for a moment and dip your feet in the Elbe · a touch of the North Sea right in the middle of the city.
  4. 455 min
Break by the water · a glass of wine with a view of the harbour

    Lunch with a view

Take a break right down by the water. Enjoy lunch at the Lotsenhaus or at Hoppes · or simply a glass of wine while the ships sail past.

Egon's tip: It pays to book ahead · on Sundays the tables right on the Elbe go quickly.
  5. 590 min
Alter Schwede · giant Ice Age boulder on the Elbe

    Alter Schwede & Ottensen

Along the way you'll meet the Alter Schwede · a gigantic boulder from the Ice Age, unearthed when the Elbe was deepened and today one of the river's quirkier landmarks. On the way back you'll head through Ottensen · one of Hamburg's cosiest quarters, with small shops, cafés and a genuine neighbourhood feel.

Egon's tip: In Ottensen it's worth wandering into the little side streets · that's where you'll find the loveliest cafés that aren't in any guidebook.
  6. 6180 min
Back at the EGON HOTEL · apple strudel and coffee in the Egon Lounge

    Back · EGON HOTEL

And just like that, you're home again. Treat yourself to a good cup of coffee and a slice of warm apple strudel in the lounge · or raise a glass to the day with a cool draught beer. A lovely walk · and welcome home to the EGON HOTEL.

Egon's tip: Tired feet? There's always a free spot on the lounge sofa.
